From initial concept development to curtain call, Laneway Theatrical Services is known for its collaborative approach, clear communication and meticulous attention to detail.
Led by founder and creative director Kim Thomsen, Laneway draws on a broad background in music, theatre and education to guide teams through every phase of the production process. Kim’s expertise spans musical direction, orchestral coordination, rehearsal planning and production design, with a particular strength in creating cohesive experiences that align artistic vision with technical delivery. Whether partnering on a full-scale musical or refining individual design and musical elements, Kim brings a calm, organised and solutions-focused presence to the rehearsal room and the theatre.

The Laneway Story
Laneway Theatrical Services began out of a genuine passion for performance and a commitment to nurturing the creative heart of the theatre community.
Founded by Kim Thomsen, the company’s origins are tied to the laneways and rehearsal spaces where stories are first imagined and brought to life.
With nearly four decades of experience in performance, conducting, and directing, Kim recognised the need for a unified theatrical service that seamlessly integrates all elements of production. Today, Laneway Theatrical Services offers a full range of creative and technical solutions for productions of any size, supported by a broad network of industry professionals.
Driven by passion, professionalism, and a profound respect for storytelling, Laneway proudly collaborates with performers, schools, and theatre companies to realise their artistic visions with exceptional craftsmanship and a distinctive theatrical touch.
Meet Our Founder
Kim Thomsen
Kim Thomsen is a powerhouse in professional musical theatre with nearly 40 years of unparalleled expertise as an educator, conductor, performer and composer.
Having worked alongside some of Australia, Broadway and the West End’s biggest names, Kim’s distinguished career spans over 60 major musical theatre productions – including iconic shows like Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story, The Producers and Spamalot.
Her influence extends internationally, with guest conducting roles across Europe in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria and Italy, and recent performances in China, demonstrating her global recognition and demand. A trailblazer, Kim was among the first female musicians in the Royal Australian Navy Band, cementing her reputation as a pioneer in the field.
Kim’s ongoing freelance work sees her collaborating with celebrated Australian artists such as Silvie Paladino, Rhonda Burchmore, Frank Woodley and Tim Campbell, while also composing and collaborating with renowned Australian actor John Wood. Internationally ,Kim has just finished touring with Broadway stars Syndee Winters (Lion King), Nic Rouleau (Book of Mormon), Andrea Macasaet (Six), Ben Crawford (Phantom of the Opera) and Westend’s Kelly Mathieson (Christine, Phantom of the opera) and Aimie Atkinson (Six).
In Australia, Kim has performed with the nation’s finest artists in premier venues and led the Cardinia Civic Concert Band as Music Director and Chief Conductor for over three decades, nurturing talent and championing a vibrant music culture. She founded CPAC theatre company and managed the NYD Academy of Performing Arts, further shaping the next generation of performers and creatives.
Holding multiple advanced degrees – including a Master of Music (Conducting), Master of Education (Research) and Bachelor of Performing Arts – Diploma of Education and other qualifications, Kim embodies a rare combination of academic rigour and artistic brilliance.
